Wearable starts out strong but stumbles at the finish line.

A few years back when smartwatches were coming into their own, I had my doubts. I loved the idea of having a smart device on my wrist like what Penny from Inspector Gadget had, but I’ve always had issues with wearing things on my wrist. I have a pronounced wrist bone and when things rub on it a certain way, it becomes uncomfortable and I end up discarding the item from my wrist. Well when it comes to smartwatches, part of the allure of them is that they are always tracking your health data. If the device isn’t on my wrist, then why have it? So, I was hesitant to use an Apple Watch for a while, but quickly found it a daily part of my life — until it started to show its age. As the Apple Watch became slower over time, I started looking at other options for wearable smart devices and I stumbled upon the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Smart Bracelet.

Comes with Chinese user manual only.

Before I had an Apple Watch, I used a fitness tracker that featured smart notifications. I was surprised by how well it functioned but found that it ultimately could not keep up with the Apple Watch. As I’ve noted, the Apple Watch had its ups and downs for me. For one thing, it was uncomfortable to type with for long periods time. For another, it weighed down my wrist. For these reasons, I took to the Mi Band 3 rather quickly. It is very lightweight and even though the silicone band causes my wrist to itch after prolonged use (the Apple Watch Sport bands had the same effect), I prefer the design of it to a larger device.

Easy to read display. Band disconnected from phone frequently.

I am using the Mi Band 3 with an iPhone Xs, but prior to it, I was using an iPhone 7. I was impressed with how well the Mi Band handled smart notifications and step counter. It works smoothly and wove itself into my ecosystem flawlessly…until recently. After I updated my phone to iOS 12, I’ve not been receiving notifications like I was on the previous version of iOS. I thought that maybe it would be fixed by reinstalling the app and repairing the device, but alas, it did not. Hybrid (2017.10.03.1 free for mac. I was really surprised that there seemed to be no logical reason for the band to be malfunctioning. It was still recording movement and other bits of data, but when it came to text and app notifications, it has completely stopped relaying that information. I did a search online for my problem and discovered that a lot of people experience intermittent loss of notifications. The problem is that the threads I was finding about this had no response from Xiaomi about how to fix it. About a week ago, the Mi Fit app had an update, but it didn’t fix the problem. So, even though I started out with what I thought might be a suitable replacement for my slowing Apple Watch, I was disappointed with the end results.

The Mi Band 3 is a suitable fitness wearable, but it really can’t be a ‘replacement’ for a smartwatch at this time due to its inconsistencies with updates and compatibility. It is a very affordable, easy to read, easy to use fitness band. On that basis, I can recommend it.
