In previous versions of Apple’s Mac OS X operating system, you could use labels to create colored folders. This feature has been modified for the most recent versions of OS X and labels only color the folder text. If you want to create colored folders on your Mac, you can download free colored folder icons and use them as icons for your folders on your MacBook.

Download the free colored folder icon pack of your choice. InterfaceLIFT, IconArchive and WeLoveIcons are three websites that offer a variety of free icons for Mac, including colored and patterned folders.

Go to your Downloads folder and open the icon pack. If the icon pack is a ZIP file, double-click to open it.

Locate the folder icon you want to use and double-click to open it with Preview. If for some reason your icon opens with another application, hold the 'Control' key and click the icon, then click “Open With” and select “Preview.”

Click “Edit” in the top menu bar of Preview and then click “Select All.” Click “Edit” again and then click “Copy.”

Locate the folder you want to replace with a colored icon folder in your Finder. Click the folder once to select it and then click “File” and “Get Info” from the top menu bar. You can also access the Get Info window by pressing the “Command” and “I” keys at the same time.

Click the icon image in the upper left corner of the Get Info window. Click “Edit” and “Paste” in the top menu bar to paste your new icon.
